University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center (Ashland, Ohio). University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center is a 52-bed hospital dedicated to serving Ohio's underserved population. In 2019, The Chartis Center for Rural Health named University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center a 100 Top Rural & Community Hospital. UH Samaritan was recognized as one of “100 Great Community Hospitals” in 2019 in Becker’s Hospital Review. Becker’s defines a community hospital as a facility with no more than 550 beds. The Becker's editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion on this list based on several outside rankings and ratings, including The Chartis Center for Rural Health's 100 Top Rural & Community Hospitals list, Healthgrades awards, and CMS stars, among other considerations.

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA), a national nonprofit membership organization which provides leadership on rural health issues, named UH Samaritan as one of the Top 20 Rural Community Hospitals based on the same Chartis Center list of 100 Top Rural Community Hospitals.  The 20 overall winners have achieved success based on the Hospital Strength INDEX®.  Samaritan was recognized during an awards ceremony at NRHA’s Rural Hospital Innovation Summit in Atlanta on May 9th.  UH Samaritan was the only hospital in Ohio to be honored.

UH Samaritan was named High Performing by U.S. News & World Report in one or more key medical specialties. Hospitals were recognized as High Performing if they were not nationally ranked in the top 50 but received a score in the top 10 percent of all hospitals receiving a score in that specialty.

UH Samaritan was among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationally to earn a 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award ™ from Healthgrades, an online consumer resource. Patient safety measures how well a hospital prevents injuries, infections and other serious conditions based on 14 potentially preventable adverse events. Samaritan has earned the Patient Safety Excellence award for three consecutive years.
