$5,000 Grant Helps Worthy Programs

LOUDONVILLE - Two gems of the Loudonville/Perrysville community are the worthy recipients of $2,500 each, made possible through the 2009 Samaritan Hospital Foundation's Community Health and Wellness Grant.

The Activity Scholarship Program and Arts in Action, both free services of the Loudonville Recreation Board, were selected based on predetermined criteria. Entries, which were received from the community, had to directly benefit the health and wellness of local residents.

The Activity Scholarship Program provides funding for organized, adult led recreational activities for area students. The activity is of the student's choosing, with current funds supporting dance, gymnastics, karate, soccer and cheerleading.

Since its inception five years ago, the Activity Scholarship Program boasts a proven success rate. One program participant just earned a college scholarship in track and field, while two other participants won academic scholarships.

The Arts in Action program offers children a creative outlet September through May. It is free to any child in the school district, with activities rotated quarterly. Activities include music, drama, photography, film making, fantasy architecture and several dance idioms. Percussion is so popular that it is offered every quarter.

The Mohican Area Health and Wellness Committee oversees the distribution of the Grant, sponsored by the Samaritan Hospital Foundation. Community leaders Herman, Pat Byerly, Judy Webster, Jeanne Leckrone and Todd McElwain serve on the committee.

Past recipients of the financial gift include the Loudonville Fire Department, the Loudonville-Perrysville School District, the Perrysville Fire Department, and the Loudonville Disaster Shelter. Funds also have been allocated to the Pathway Bridge Project and the Bike Trail Project.
