Dr. Heidi Schecodnic is Taking New Patients

 Heidi L. Schecodnic, M.D., welcomes her former patients of Medical Consultants of Ashland and a limited number of new patients.  Her office is located at 350 Hillcrest Drive in the Samaritan Hillcrest Building. The office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.  You can schedule an appointment by calling (419) 289-9800.

      Dr. Schecodnic completed her internal medicine residency through the Medical College of Ohio, in Toledo, where she received her doctor of medicine degree.

      She looks forward to continuing to serve the needs of Ashland residents and surrounding communities.  Dr. Schecodnic, her husband, and her children reside in Ashland.

Samaritan Welcomes Family Practitioner

Samaritan Regional Health System (SRHS) is pleased to welcome Julie (Oneacre) Jones back to the community as a family practice physician.  Dr. Jones is board certified in family practice and will offer services to infants, children, and adults at her Ashland office.

            We are very happy that Dr. Jones made the decision to return to her roots, said Danny L. Bogg, president and CEO of SRHS.  “Dr. Jones is a very caring and talented physician with values that match those of our community.  We look forward to her joining the Samaritan family.

            Dr. Jones received a bachelor of science degree in Life Science from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.  She obtained her doctorate of medicine from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.  Her family medicine residency was completed at the Dayton Community Family Medicine Residency Program in Dayton, where she was chief resident her final year.

            “I am very happy to return back home to the area to open a practice and raise my two sons,” said Jones.  “I was born at Samaritan in Ashland, raised in the surrounding area, and my family still resides in the Hillsdale School District.  I feel connected here.  This is such a wonderful, friendly community to raise my boys in.  I would enjoy seeing patients with a variety of concerns and particularly like taking care of entire families.”

            Prior to returning to Ohio this summer, Dr. Jones worked for four years at the Sanford Medical Group, which is affiliated with the Central Carolina Hospital, in Sanford, N.C..  She has also worked in family medicine at various other clinics and centers.

            While living in North Carolina, Dr. Jones volunteered her time as a physician at the Moore Free Care Clinic and held many volunteer positions at her church.

            Her professional memberships include the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.

Samaritan Announces Addition of Pulmonologist to Medical Staff

 

Samaritan Regional Health System (SRHS) announces the addition of James Robert Powell, M.D., FCCP, to its medical staff.

"Samaritan Hospital is very happy to welcome Dr. Powell to our medical staff.” said Danny Boggs, president and CEO of SRHS. “The addition of a pulmonologist/critical care fellow was one of the top strategic needs identified by our medical staff.

Dr. Powell will allow us to meet those needs, but more importantly, he and his family will be a wonderful addition to the Ashland community.”

Dr. Powell is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.  He will offer pulmonary services for conditions such as COPD, Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Lung Cancer, Black Lung and more.  He will see patients Monday through Friday at Samaritan Hospital in the Ambulatory Care Medical (ACM) outpatient unit.

“We love it in Ashland already,” Dr. Powell said.  “People are very friendly and put themselves out to help us.  I am looking forward to working here.”

Prior to joining the SRHS medical staff this month, Dr. Powell was in private practice for 15 years in Uniontown, Pa.  During that time, he was affiliated with Uniontown Hospital as a staff physician and pulmonary consultant for 15 years, as well as their medical director of respiratory care for 5 years.  In addition, he also was affiliated with Brownsville General Hospital in Brownsville, Pa., as a pulmonary consultant.

Dr. Powell obtained his bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.  He received his medical doctorate in 1982 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa.  He completed an internship and residency with the department of surgery, the department of medicine, and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine from the department of medicine all at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Currently, he is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, from which he was granted a fellowship. He is also a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Fayette County Medical Society, and the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Powell has relocated to Ashland County with his wife, Deborah, and their five daughters who range in age from 8 to 19.

Samaritan Hospital Announces General Surgeons to Medical Staff

Samaritan Regional Health System (SRHS) is pleased to announce the addition of two new physicians to our medical community. Harpreet S. Brar, M.D. and Adam S. Martin, M.D. will be joining Mary C. MacDonald, M.D. in the practice of General Surgery, and will be seeing patients in the Hillcrest Medical Building, located at 350 Hillcrest Drive in Ashland.

Samaritan continues to add new physicians to the medical staff as part of an on-going commitment to meet a wide range of health care needs in the community. Physician recruitment has been a top priority of and one of the strategic initiatives established by the System’s Board of Directors and Hospital leaders.

“Samaritan is committed to continuing to take a leading role in the recruitment and retention of quality physicians to serve the greater Ashland community,” said Danny L. Boggs, President and CEO of SRHS.  “Samaritan has been fortunate to find two very qualified surgeons who both have decided to move their families and medical practice to Ashland. Their skills and experiences will certainly enhance the quality and availability of surgical care at Samaritan Hospital and we are looking forward to having them as members of our medical staff and community.” 

Recruiting talented professionals like this to our community requires a real team effort, Boggs continued.  “I would like to thank our Medical Staff leaders, their families, and those community leaders that assisted Samaritan with our recruitment efforts,” he said.

Dr. Brar, who is Board Certified in Surgery, graduated from Medical School at the University of Texas, Houston, and in 1987 was commissioned in the United States Navy, where his duties have included serving as Flight and Ship Surgeon. He has been stationed at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA since 2000. Over his 20 years of active duty in the Navy, he has completed deployments to Haiti, and a combat tour in Iraq, in 2005 – 2006. He also has been awarded the 2007 John S. Jordan Award for Excellence in Resident Education. This award is given to only one individual each year at the Naval Medical Center at Portsmouth Surgical Residency Program. Additionally, he has received the meritorious service medal, joint services commendation medal and, most recently, a Bronze Star, following his duty in Iraq.

His general surgery privileges include laparoscopy and advanced laparoscopic cases, including Lap Nissen (heart burn surgery), Lap hernias and Lap assisted colon surgery. Dr. Brar also is able to perform upper and lower endoscopy, and limited head and neck procedures, including thyroid and parathyroid surgical procedure, as well as sentinel node biopsy of the breast.

While Dr. Brar plans to begin work in Ashland on August 20, Dr. Martin began work here on July 31. Dr. Martin graduated in June of 2007 from the General Surgery Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. He moved to Ashland with his fiance after graduation. His educational background includes a bachelor of science in math from the University of Chicago and a master of science in physics and astronomy from the University of Kentucky. He worked both as a teaching and research assistant during graduate school. His thesis was in nuclear physics and spectroscopy. He has both academic and educational publications in medicine and physics.

His scope of practice will include breast, laparoscopy, endoscopy, and other general surgery procedures.
