Celiac Disease

It is estimated that of the 3 million people battling celiac disease, only five percent are accurately diagnosed. A multitude of varying symptoms contribute to this fact. Nurse Pat Butcher will share her knowledge of the disease, and the warning signs, on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Samaritan on Main.

Considered an inherited autoimmune disease, celiac disease damages the lining of the small intestine when gluten, and other proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats, is consumed. These grains must be eliminated from the diet to avoid continued damage, and life-threatening complications.
