History

In 1912, Jesse Lewis and Mary Clark gave Samaritan Hospital to the city of Ashland, Ohio. Samaritan Hospital was formed as a general, acute-care, inpatient facility. J.L. Clark envisioned "a hospital where no sick person would ever be refused care."

Ever since, Samaritan Hospital has been fulfilling that mission as Ashland County's only hospital. Our commitment to providing quality healthcare is evident in our mission of "to take the lead in promoting the health and wellness of people in communities we serve."

Today known as Samaritan Regional Health System (SRHS), our sincere commitment to high-quality care remains at the heart of the organization. Whether it's hospitality extended to patients and visitors, or gentle compassion demonstrated in our practice of medicine, our values of compassion and respect, integrity, and service excellence are constant.

Our Current Status

Our philosophy is based on meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the communities we serve. Taking a proactive approach to care, we are constantly evaluating growth opportunities while investing in advanced medicine and technology. We offer Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment, an advanced nuclear medicine camera, a 16-slice (multislice) CT scanner, a low-risk adult catheterization lab, and an extended Emergency Department with a rooftop heliport.  We have also renovated our outpatient and surgery areas to showcase a more healing environment where family can be close by, as well as constructing a discharge elevator to allow for easier, and more private patient discharge.

Continual upgrades ensure that the people of central Ohio have access to a vast range of services, from health screening programs to the latest in advanced surgeries. Moreover, the benefits from services that once required delays or travel are now conveniently available nearby.

SRHS is the community leader in promoting wellness in a variety of medical areas, including pediatrics, obstetrics, surgical services, intensive care, radiology, social services and more. Our Blood Draw Clinic is located off the main lobby to reduce the time required for community members to obtain blood work as outpatients, and the retail pharmacy fills prescription needs while you wait. In addition, our full-service cafeteria, Sam's Café, offers families and visitors delicious meals and snacks.

Beyond our main campus (Samaritan Hospital), SRHS offers several stand-alone facilities providing specialty care. Patients depend on SRHS centers for family wellness, outpatient testing, sleep disorder therapy, women's wellness, and rehabilitation.

Supplying extensive healthcare needs requires many capable, well-trained professionals. SRHS, one of the area's largest employers, employs more than 650 individuals. Coupled with the generous support of over 290 spirited volunteers, SRHS leads the way in community-based healthcare. Our staff places care at the heart of each and every service.

In addition to Samaritan Hospital, SRHS consists of aims-Occupational Health Services, Kettering-Samaritan Health Center, Samaritan Health and Rehabilitation Center, Samaritan Home Care, Samaritan Heart Services, Samaritan Medical Office Building, Samaritan Professional Park, Samaritan Retail Pharmacy, Samaritan Sleep Lab, Samaritan Women's Health Services, and several other medical buildings leased to physicians. SRHS has 54 physicians on our active medical staff, offering a wide modality of care and practices, and over 104 total physician on our Samaritan Medical Staff.

Samaritan Hospital, Kettering-Samaritan Health Center, and Samaritan Home Care are all accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for meeting nationally recognized health care standards. Samaritan was also the first hospital in the nation to be awarded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Star Award for its exemplary health and safety program. Additionally, the hospital and many of its facilities have been recognized by various government agencies.

As medical technology continues to evolve, we strive to meet the needs and expectations of our patients. No matter what technical investments or medical innovations are required, you can rely on SRHS to continue a strong tradition that began in 1912. Because caring and achieving optimum wellness will always remain our commitment to you.
