Phase 1 of Samaritan Hospital Expansion Marked for Completion

At the end of 2007, Samaritan announced to the public an expansion and renovation project to add 16,239 square feet of new space to the Hospital, as well as renovating 22,802 square feet of space.  Departments that are affected include the emergency, health information management (HIM), radiology, quality assurance, and maintenance.

Our Samaritan emergency department (ED) currently serves over 27,000 patients annually.  Over the next few years, that number is expected to increase to over 30,000 per year.

We’ve progressed a lot since February, when the construction team started renovating space inside and behind the current ED. By mid-July, emergency department patient bays and nursing stations will open to the public, and construction work on the next section will begin.  Patients and visitors will be directed to a south entrance and temporary triage and waiting rooms will be set-up for patients and visitors.

.           “Patients and visitors should be aware that they may be directed to some alternative entrances and areas until the expansion is completed,” said Ron Manchester, vice president of support services and construction. “We have made every effort to keep the flow of our Hospital fluid for patients and visitors.”

“Phase 2” of the project is set for completion in the Fall of 2008, with a new emergency entrance, waiting rooms, and patient bays.  Below the ground level, health information management’s (HIM or medical records) expansion will be complete, as well as new offices for the quality assesment staff.  HIM will remain in their current location and be expanded to provide more file space for patient records.

Samaritan Regional Health System appreciates the community’s patience while we work to continually improve Samaritan Hospital.

“The main focus of our renovation and expansion is to allow for more efficient and comfortable patient care,” said Barbara Workman, director of the emergency department at Samaritan Hospital.  “We put in place a process where a combination of many departments were surveyed and interviewed to collect input about what was needed in our ED to allow us to continue the best possible patient care and improve work flow for staff as well.”

The renovation will allow Samaritan to upgrade all emergency treatment rooms to private rooms and many rooms will have televisions. The private rooms will meet compliance issues, as well as being larger to accommodate more family.   “The project streamlines all our patient care processes and eases physician relations with patients and family members to discuss situations in private,” Workman continued.

The completed project will also feature a second CT scanner that will be situated inside the emergency department to expedite patient testing without interrupting the outpatient scanning schedule.  In addition, there will also be a room dedicated to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, which treats sexual assault and GYN patients who need forensic evidence collected in a private and confidential manner.

Construction in the ED will include the addition of an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) room and an infection control room, for patients who have contagious diseases and need to be kept away from other patients being seen for different issues.

A new bereavement room will overlook an inspirational garden will be available for family members of the deceased. The concept is designed to provide comfort in their time of mourning.  Adjacent to the bereavement room will be a private area for family members to spend time with their loved ones.

A new emergency department entrance will be created and face Hillcrest Drive. Changes to the Emergency department will include a new triage area to allow for more efficient assessment of patients based on their illness or injury, expanded private trauma rooms, and renovation of the emergency squad bay to accommodate additional squad vehicles. Other renovations include a small play area for children to help them pass the wait time.

“We want to make the patient’s stay as short as possible, while also meeting all their expectations,” Workman said.  “Of course some people, depending on their severity, sometimes must stay longer for proper treatment, but overall this project should make our process much more efficient and patient friendly.”

The total project cost, including the installation of a second CAT scanner, will cost approximately $8.5 million dollars.  Completion of the project is expected to be around the end of December 2008.

Emergency Department Expansion Update: 1/25/08

Samaritan Hospital closed their patient room bays on the front part of the Emergency Department Friday and is installing temporary work partitions.  However, patients and visitors may still enter through the front ED doors.

“We appreciate our community’s patience with our construction activities,” said Ron Manchester, vice president of support services and construction.

During the second week of February, the construction team plans to start renovating space behind the partitions.  “Patient and visitors should be aware that our ED will be somewhat more noisy than usual due to construction,” Manchester said. “However, we have made every effort to keep the flow of our ED fluid for our patients and visitors.”  The two waiting rooms at the front of the ED will still be accessible for use.

During this time, construction will continue on the exterior addition to the ED. By the second quarter of 2008, all but four of the new ED bays will be open to the public.  Work will continue in the second and third quarters on the remainder of the ED rooms on the west side of the building, as well as staff areas.

Soon to undergo construction will be our Health Information Management (Medical Records) department.  This department is located beneath the ED on the basement floor of Samaritan’s tower addition.  Next week, construction crews will partition off part of this area, which will require a temporary relocation of certain staff members to another floor.  However, public access to this area for record requests will still be available as usual.

The Hospital has also recently revised its’ parking policy, to accommodate patients and visitors with more parking options.

Expansion Project Announced at Samaritan

Over the next few years, Samaritan Regional Health System (SRHS) is planning several major construction projects.  The first one set to begin is an expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department (ED) at Samaritan Hospital.

Our Samaritan ED currently serves over 27,000 patients annually.  That equates to be nearly 75 per day, 365 days a year!  Over the next few years, that number is expected to increase to over 30,000 per year.

“In 2001, when the ED Expansion and Tower project was started, SRHS made a promise to our stakeholders to complete a new ED as “Phase II” of that project,” said Danny L. Boggs, president and CEO of SRHS.  “This planning is now complete and our Samaritan Board of Directors has approved moving forward with this wonderful new addition.”

This project will include the addition of 16,239 square feet of new space to our Hospital, as well as 22,802 square feet of renovated space.  This totals 39,041 square feet.  Departments that will be affected include the ED, Health Information Management (HIM), Radiology, Quality Assurance, and Maintenance.

The total project cost, including the installation of a second CAT scanner, will cost approximately $8.5 million dollars.  Simonson Construction was the winning contractor.  Completion of the project is expected to be around August of 2008.

The new arrangement will allow for utilization of all rooms in one location.  “The project streamlines all our patient care processes and eases physician relations with patients and family members to discuss situations in private,” Workman continued.

The completed project will also feature a second CT scanner that is situated inside the emergency department to expedite patient testing without interrupting the outpatient scanning schedule.  In addition, there will also be a room dedicated to the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program, which treats sexual assault and GYN patients who need forensic evidence collected in a private and confidential manner.

Construction in the ED will include the addition of an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) room, for patients struggling with those types of ailments and an infection control room, for patients who have contagious diseases and need to be kept away from other patients being seen for different issues.

A new bereavement room, that will overlook and inspirational garden will be available for family members of the deceased. The concept is designed to provide comfort in their time of mourning.  Adjacent to the bereavement room will be a private area for family members to spend time with their loved ones.

A new emergency department entrance will be created and face Hillcrest Drive. Changes to the Emergency department will include a new triage area for more efficient categorizing of patients based on their presenting illness or injury, expanded more private trauma rooms, and renovation of the emergency squad bay to accommodate additional squad vehicles. Other renovations include a small play area for children to help them pass the wait time.

“We want to make the patient’s stay as short as possible, while also meeting all their expectations,” Workman said.  “Of course some people depending on their severity sometimes must stay longer for proper treatment, but overall this project should make our ED much more efficient and patient friendly.”

On January 29th, several Samaritan services moved into offices in the Ashland Medical Center.  Our aims-Occupational Health Services relocated to the Second Floor of the Ashland Medical Center.  The move provides more convenient access for patients and cost effective “one-stop” service for area employers.  aims features an expanded waiting area, additional exam rooms, and the capability to treat initial work-related injuries.

X-ray and laboratory services also are available next door in newly dedicated Samaritan’s T.W. Miller Health Services suite, for patients that require more extensive diagnostic care.  The hours for aims have remained the same: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As mentioned, Samaritan’s T. W. Miller Health Services also resides on the Second Floor of the Ashland Medical Center.  It houses Samaritan Women’s Health Services, formerly located at 1590 Crestview Dr., as well as outpatient x-ray and laboratory services.

Women’s Health Services continues to offer the same great personal touches with screening mammograms, bone densitometry, and education.  Women are afforded the same privacy and care that they are accustomed to at Samaritan Women’s Health Services, in a newly decorated, bright, and comfortable environment.  The suite waiting area includes a panoramic view of a woodland landscape and a flowing brook that adds its own unique serenity to the patient experience.  Samaritan Women’s Health Services also has another private waiting room for the utmost in privacy.

T.W. Miller Health Services also provides a draw lab that is open as an outpatient service to patients within the building, as well as community members that find it convenient (much like the blood draw labs at the Hospital, Samaritan Medical Building on Baney Rd., and at Kettering-Samaritan Health Center).  X-ray services are on-hand to provide for anyone in need of x-ray services from physicians within Ashland Medical Center only.

The hours for Samaritan’s T.W. Miller Health Services are now 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.

For all three areas within T.W. Miller Health Services, registration is centrally located and performed.

New Growth at Samaritan Professional Park Unfolds for New Year

It’s the time of year that snow usually flies and we stay huddled up in our houses drinking cocoa and preparing to watch our favorite shows of the new television season.

This year, however, with the weather acting more like Springtime…bringing cool breezes, the smell of damp ground, and rays of sunshine…we are pleased to announce the new growth and expansion in medical services being offered to our community.

Samaritan Professional Park, a 33.5 acreage of land located near the corners ofRt. 42 and Mifflin Ave. in Ashland, has begun to evolve into shape this winter.

The view at Samaritan Professional Park consists of glorious scenery, with several ponds on the land that lends it a naturalistic, city park-type feel.  In 2006, Samaritan employees participated in a contest to name the acreage. Samaritan Professional Park was chosen as the name reflects both the natural aspects of the area as well as current and future business development activities.

The vision for this area really began in 1998 when Samaritan Regional Health System first purchased the acreage.  Samaritan, like many other hospitals in the nation, had begun to look at strategic planning processes that included moving services, traditionally located in the hospital proper, to facilities more easily accessible and convenient for the patient.

In 2001, SRHS bought additional acreage, contiguous to the original purchase, to make off-campus services available and, in some cases, more accessible. Samaritan Professional Park is now home to a new building called the Ashland Medical Center, at 2212 Mifflin Ave.  The beautiful 40,000 square foot facility currently houses the offices of Ashland Eyecare; Ashland ENT, Allergy and Hearing Aid Center; Dr. John Peck, II, M.D.; and soon will include several outpatient services of Samaritan Regional Health System

Additional land in the Park, zoned commercial, is now available for lease or purchase.  Deed and development restrictions allow for structures such as banks, offices, medical and dental clinics, and similar businesses. For instance, a 6,000 square foot kidney dialysis center just west of the Ashland Medical Center building is currently under construction.  This building will house a group of Mansfield physicians that serve approximately 40 Ashland County patients in their nephrology services.  It will afford convenience for those patients undergoing kidney dialysis treatment.

The Park has an extensive set of building site specifications that insures attractive building exteriors, extensive landscaping, and the continuation of a park-like setting.

In addition, the center of the Park lends to the natural beauty of the area with two large ponds and beautiful landscaping.  The approximately five acres of serenity are to be donated this year to the City of Ashland in order to create a municipal park for everyone to enjoy.  It will feature walking paths and other amenities that are in keeping with the health and wellness opportunities that nature so freely gives.

Several events, such as an open house and a health fair, are being planned for early spring so that the community may be introduced to Ashland Medical Center within Samaritan Professional Park.  Please watch for more details as planning unfolds!

Samaritan trusts that the Ashland community will find Samaritan Professional Park to be a welcome addition to our area.  Whether it is healthcare services, or other needs, that may be met with ongoing, future development, the concept is designed to add value for consumers and businesses alike.  Please continue to read future newsletters and other Samaritan communication venues for more information on the progress at Samaritan Professional Park.
