Birthing and Women's Unit Expansion

On Monday, August 15, 2011, the Birthing and Women’s Unit health care team welcomed the first patients to the new 8,500 square feet of space. The new space was designed to promote comfort, bonding and healing for women - after a gynecological surgery or during and after giving birth - in a beautiful and calm atmosphere. The new Birthing and Women’s Unit features:

• The widely popular LDRP birthing suites for patients to labor, deliver and recover in the same room throughout their stay. Beautifully designed custom cabinetry houses necessary items for newborn assessment following birth, encouraging family bonding. An extra large couch in each birthing suite converts to a bed.

• A glass enclosed atrium with plants and a soothing waterfall.

• A private and large bathroom located in each patient room. These hotel-style bathrooms even feature built-in hair dryers.

The space formerly occupied by the Birthing and Women’s Unit is now under construction and is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year or early 2012. Features of this new space include:

• A state-of-the-art surgical room for Cesarean sections.

• A waiting room featuring a fireplace.

• An education room for our Childbirth Preparation Classes, Breastfeeding Classes, and Sibling Classes.

• A lactation room for breastfeeding mothers returning to the Birthing and Women’s Unit for advice and assistance.

The expansion of Samaritan Hospital’s Emergency Department, which was completed in early 2009, was the first phase of the “Invest Today/Secure Tomorrow” capital campaign. Future projects include the expansion of ICU and the Med/Surg/Peds Unit.

“The new Birthing and Women’s Unit offers patients outstanding care in a beautiful environment and provides our community with an efficiently functioning, state-of-the-art facility for women and their families,” said Bev Spreng, Samaritan Hospital Foundation Development Director.

Donations for the “Invest Today/Secure Tomorrow” capital campaign are deeply appreciated. Please contact Spreng at the Samaritan Hospital Foundation, 419-207-7861 or http://www.samaritanhospitalfoundation.org/ for more information.
